Playground Case Studies

With several mature trees, this wonderful area was full of dated equipment and crying out for development. All but one of the existing pieces of equipment was removed, with one rope frame being repositioned.

This area, between two classrooms, has become an extension of the school’s learning space. The close proximity to the classrooms allows for free-flowing play and learning experiences.

These structures stimulate social and physical play through their simple and open-ended designs which encourage: Cooperation, Cooperation, Sharing and turn-taking, Inclusion, Communication and Self-confidence.

The area was exclusively given over to a large, dated fort that was not suitable for use by the junior school children.

We decided to go back and take some pictures of a renovated playground that has been in use for some time. A fort was created to act as a viewing platform so that the children have a great view of the road.

After the removal of a large fort that dominated much of the playground the Kindergarten wanted to introduce a natural area with scope for water and messy play.

A small area on a slope at this Auckland school was underutilised and the school wished to provide an outdoor area to augment their play-based learning programme.

The Under Two Area was tired and in need of rejuvenating. Among the issues that needed addressing were water pooling on the grass area, a hard to access sandpit, and the desire for a bike track.

The sensory garden incorporated features such as this stepping stone path which has been planted with ground cover including several different types of thyme.
